Description

Antique Solid Silver Waiter (Salver) – Hester Bateman, London 1788, Armorial Crest

A rare and important antique solid silver waiter (salver) by the celebrated Georgian silversmith Hester Bateman, hallmarked London, 1788.

This fine Georgian salver is engraved with an armorial crest featuring a horse’s head and the Latin family motto “Nil Desperandum Auspice Deo” – translated as “Do not despair, trust in God”. It also bears a later inscription: “FJWC From his godfather I.M. Barstow 5th Sept 1861”, adding further provenance and interest.

Although the maker’s mark has been lightly struck and rubbed, under magnification it can be read as Hester Bateman. This has been taken into account in the pricing, making this a particularly attractive opportunity to acquire a piece by one of the most famous women silversmiths in history.

Why Collect Hester Bateman?
Hester Bateman (1708–1794) is one of the most celebrated English silversmiths of the Georgian period, famed for her elegant neo-classical style and fine craftsmanship. Pieces by her are highly sought after, and waiters and salvers from her workshop are especially desirable.

This is a rare and fine example of 18th-century English silver, combining craftsmanship, armorial engraving, and Bateman provenance. Perfect for collectors of Georgian silver, armorial silverware, or important named makers, it would also make a distinguished presentation or display piece.
