Description

Omar Ramsden & Alwyn Carr Arts & Crafts Silver Napkin Ring – London 1912, Family Provenance

A rare and historically important Arts & Crafts silver napkin ring by the renowned partnership Omar Ramsden & Alwyn Carr, hallmarked London, 1912.

This fine quality octagonal napkin holder is of exceptional craftsmanship, as expected from Ramsden & Carr, the most celebrated English silversmithing partnership of the early 20th century. A sign of its high quality are the two hand-chased inscriptions, each bearing a different name:

  • Joan Margaret Downs-Butcher

  • Joan Lascelles-Gilmore

Joan was the stepdaughter of Omar Ramsden, and later married Dr. James Lascelles-Gilmore. This napkin ring was therefore almost certainly a wedding gift from Ramsden himself to his stepdaughter, making it a unique piece of both personal and silversmithing history.
